Finding the conversion in a regulated operations role
An IT asset disposition and e-waste recovery business hired an operations and safety lead from a multinational to run its disposition operations. Described in general operations terms, the role looked like a sideways move. The conversion sat in the regulated work at the centre of the business.
Industry context
IT asset disposition sits where data security, environmental regulation and materials recovery meet. Retired servers, laptops and storage have to be tracked through custody, data has to be destroyed to a verifiable standard, and recovered materials are settled against assay results. It is a regulated process business, and the operations role inside it carries compliance weight that general operations roles do not.
What changed and why CCP applied
The candidate came from operations and health and safety leadership at a multinational, so general operations duties would have overlapped heavily with that background. The role the business actually needed centred on data destruction governance, licensing, inbound chain of custody, assay settlement and process design for the disposition workflow. That regulated scope was new to the candidate, and it was the real job.
Our strategy
We reviewed eligibility first. In our consultation process, we then aligned the role scope with the regulated work at the centre of the business, so the conversion was clear on its own terms. The on-the-job plan followed the same structure, and the supporting documents, including the workforce composition records, were prepared for review.
OJT activities included
- Mapping the disposition workflow end to end, from intake to settlement.
- Redesigning standard operating procedures and controls for data destruction.
- Running inbound chain of custody for retired equipment.
- Building traceability reporting across the process.
Outcome
- Role
- Operations and safety lead converted into a manager of IT asset disposition operations and process development
- Pathway
- Different job scope pathway (new hire)
- Status
- Approved
- Strategic value
- A regulated operations function documented properly from the start
Key takeaway
A role can read like a sideways move when it is described in general terms. In regulated businesses the specialist scope is often where the conversion sits, so look at what the role really involves before deciding a candidate does not qualify.
