From desktop engineering into operations leadership, and one candidate screened out

Case / 2026−28 IT managed services / technical support Single role · eligibility triage

An IT managed services firm wanted to move a hands-on engineer into a role covering growth and customer operations. It also wanted to convert a second staff member. Only one of the two was eligible, and establishing that before submission was the more valuable part of the engagement.

Industry context

Managed services firms grow by turning good technicians into people who can own customer relationships and operational quality. It is one of the most common, and most commonly botched, internal transitions in the industry, because the technical skill that earns the promotion is not the skill the new role needs.

What changed and why CCP applied

The move from desktop engineering into a growth and customer operations scope is a genuine discipline change: account ownership, service quality management, commercial responsibility, and team coordination. None of it overlaps meaningfully with the prior role, which is precisely what conversion support is for.

Our strategy

Both candidates were assessed against eligibility criteria before any documentation was prepared. One did not meet the criteria, and that was communicated to the client immediately rather than tested through a submission. There is a commercial temptation to submit marginal cases and let the assessor decide. It is bad practice. A withdrawn application costs a client nothing; a rejected one costs credibility on the next submission, and an approved application that should not have been approved is a liability the client carries for the duration of the funding period and beyond.

Outcome

Roles
Technical engineering into growth and customer operations leadership
Candidates assessed
Two; one eligible, one withdrawn pre-submission
Application status
Eligible conversion progressed
Strategic value
A clean submission record preserved, and the client spared a wasted internal process

Key takeaway

Screening a candidate out is a service, not a failure. The value of an advisor is partly in the applications they decline to submit.
