Building a digital function inside a traditional craft business
A bespoke tailoring house, a business whose value proposition is craft, fit, and personal relationship, needed a digital marketing function it had never had. The conversion supported both the hire and the structured training required to make the role work in a company with no digital precedent.
Industry context
Heritage craft businesses face a specific version of the digital problem. The product cannot be commoditised or sold from a template, so generic digital marketing practice actively damages the brand. What the business needs is someone who can translate craft into digital narrative, which is a different skill set from performance marketing, and one that has to be built deliberately.
What changed and why CCP applied
The role did not exist in the business in any form. There was no incumbent to learn from, no internal benchmark, and no supervisor who had done the job. Conversion support with a structured training plan was the mechanism that made the hire viable rather than speculative.
Our strategy
Where a business has no incumbent capability, the training plan carries more weight than usual, because there is nothing else demonstrating that the company can actually develop the person it is hiring. A full training blueprint was built covering the discipline end to end, phased so that each stage produced something the business could evaluate. Selection was structured deliberately as well. Where the receiving function does not exist, the wrong hire is not recoverable through supervision, so the interview process was built to test for the specific translation skill the role required rather than for general digital experience.
OJT activities included
- End-to-end training blueprint for a discipline with no internal precedent.
- Phased structure so each stage produced evaluable output for a business unable to assess the work by instinct.
- Structured interview process designed around the specific capability the role required.
- Documentation carried through to claim preparation.
Outcome
- Role
- Digital marketing management
- Context
- No incumbent digital function in the business
- Application status
- Progressed with full training blueprint; documentation carried to claim stage
- Strategic value
- A digital capability established without diluting a craft-led brand
Key takeaway
Conversion works best precisely where the receiving function does not exist yet, because that is when the gap is largest and easiest to evidence. The harder cases are the ones where the company already half-does the job.
